GARAGE ART PROJECT 2025
Chingkai - paper artist
“My artwork explores the theme of polarizing opposites to examine traits associated with fitness and physical performance. It delves into gender differences, the societal judgments of strength and weakness, and the dual nature of ego—both enabling and destructive.
Imagery found in the découpage includes feathered wing, claw of a beast, aircraft wing, prosthetic limb, and peripheral elements that are mechanical, mythical, technological, and natural. This combination highlights the divergence of concepts in speed, power, performance; and tension between in-born talent and nurtured skills.
Central to my work is the use of gold paper, which serves as a medium that challenges conventional notions of strength and value. While gold is often associated with durability and preciousness, paper can be perceived as fragile. By sculpting paper into forms that embody both strength and creativity, I invite viewers to reconsider what they perceive as strong or precious. This duality compellingly illustrates that appearances can be deceptive; what seems robust may be fragile, and what seems delicate can embody great resilience.
Through this piece, I aim to provoke thought and dialogue around identity, potential, and the multifaceted nature of physicality, encouraging viewers to reassess their preconceived notions about performance and capability.”
